License plate (Armenia)
Armenian license plates have black letters on a white background and are therefore similar to the European standard. Since August 2014, the signs have shown the letters AM under the flag of Armenia on the left edge. Older signs show a hologram badge instead of the flag. They are in use in Armenia as well as in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Artsakh .
Standard license plate
The actual combination consists of five digits and two, originally slightly reduced letters according to the pattern 12 ՍՍ 345
(private person) or 123 ՍՍ 45
(legal person). Originally, the two-digit number indicated the province in which the vehicle was registered. Meanwhile, the license plates are assigned centrally with consecutive numbers. Initially, only those letters were used for serial numbers that occur in a similar form in both the Latin and the Armenian alphabet (Տ, Ս, Լ, Օ, Ո). Other letters of the Latin alphabet are now also being used. Within the scheme, there is the option of a custom identifier in which other Latin letters are also permitted. State institutions also receive special series.

Vehicles used for public transport have yellow license plates with four digits and one letter. The letter is at the end of the sign for buses and at the beginning for taxis. As in many former Soviet republics, diplomatic plates show a red background. They start with two small digits that encode the country of origin, followed by a D (diplomat) or T (technical staff). More digits follow before the sign ends with the letters AM or ARM for Armenia. United Nations vehicles are given light blue license plates beginning with the letters UN . This is followed by four digits and a letter.
Military plates begin with the letters ՊԲ for poor. Պէտական Բանակ ( National Army ) followed by a combination of letters and numbers. Department of Defense license plates have a complementary color scheme with white lettering and a black background. They show the letters ՊՆ for poor. Պաշտպանության Նախարարություն (Department of Defense) plus a four-digit number and letter.
Before independence, the Armenian SSR, as part of the Soviet Union, used Soviet license plates with the abbreviations АД (AD) and АР (AR).
