The Syrian license plates have had black text on a white background since 1997. The signs are divided into four. In the left field under the name of the governorate you can find the actual registration in Arabic script, consisting of a maximum of six digits. This is followed in the second field by the letters SYR, one above the other, as an abbreviation for the country name. In the third part of the shield, the letters appear in Arabic script and the fourth field repeats the registration in Arabic numerals.
Signs are also issued in US format. License plates for private vehicles that are used to transport people (e.g. taxis) have a red label. The background is red for public vehicles used to transport people. Rental cars have blue license plates with white text.
