The Kyrgyz license plates correspond to the European standard. They are 520 × 110 mm in size and show black text on a white background. The current system was introduced on June 1, 2016. The signs show a separate area on the left, on which the two-digit provincial code, the Kyrgyz flag and the nationality symbol KG appear. In the case of private vehicles, the actual combination consists of three digits and three letters. License plates for foreigners and foreign institutions show a yellow background and no flag. They have four digits and one letter. Diplomatic license plates show a red or blue background. This means that the Kyrgyz license plates are based on the color scheme of the last Soviet license plates .

In the old registration system until May 2016, there was a red band on the left edge, which stylized the Kyrgyz flag. The combination consisted of a letter, four digits and a maximum of two other letters. The region from which the vehicle comes could be read from the first letter. Identifiers for foreigners living in Kyrgyzstan also showed black letters on a yellow background in the old system. They started with the letters KG , followed by the region code and another letter. Four digits also appear. Diplomatic license plates showed a red background and a field with the validity information on the right edge. At first the writing was black and the signs consisted of one letter and four digits. Later license plates showed white letters and now five digits. The first two digits indicated the country of origin in both versions.

Before independence, the Kyrgyz SSR, as part of the Soviet Union, used Soviet license plates with Cyrillic region abbreviations. Until 2016, the abbreviations were valid with only one Latin letter, which is also used in the Cyrillic alphabet.
