Location of the Issyk Kul region in Kyrgyzstan

The Issyk Kul region ( Kyrgyz Ысык-Көл облусу Yssyk-Köl oblussu ; Russian Иссык-Кульская область Issyk-Kulskaja oblast ) is one of seven regions of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia .

It lies in the northeast of the country and is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north and China to the south . The area has an area of 43,144 km² and about 450,000 inhabitants. The population density is relatively low with 10 inhabitants per km² (measured against the population density of the whole country, which is 26 inhabitants per km²). The area consists largely of the high mountains of the Tianshan . The name derives from the mountain lake Issykköl, which covers about one seventh of the area of the area.

The administrative center of the area is the city of Karakol (formerly Prschewalsk ). It is located near the eastern shore of the lake.

geography

Landscape near the Issyk Kul

In the south of the Issykköl area on the southern slope of the Kyrgyz mountains is the source of the Naryn, which is the larger source river of the Syr Darya . In the triangle between China and Kazakhstan, the Dschengisch Tschokusu (formerly Pik Pobedy ) is the highest mountain in Kyrgyzstan. Large parts of the area belong to the Issykköl Biosphere Reserve , which covers 20% of the Kyrgyz territory.

The region around the mountain lake Issykköl has a high mountain climate, which is tempered by the water masses of the lake and the mountains surrounding the lake. The mountain ranges shield the valley of the Issyk Kul from the cold air masses so that it does not freeze over all year round. The lake provides mild and cool air in its surroundings, so that the climate of the Issykkol valley is very different from the other valleys in the region. The annual average temperature is between 6 ° C and 7 ° C, the average temperature in January is -2 ° C on the southern and northern shores of the lake, on the east bank at −10 ° C and on the west bank at -4 ° C. In July the average temperature reaches almost 18 ° C. The maximum temperatures are between 27 and 30 ° C, the lowest temperatures between −12 and −18 ° C.

In connection with the mostly westerly wind, there are big differences in the precipitation patterns between the east bank and the west bank of the lake. Around the city of Balyktschy on the west side about 110 mm of precipitation falls per year, around Tüp it falls about 569 mm per year. Most of the precipitation falls in summer. To the west of Issyk Kul, spring also begins later, summer is hotter and winter is colder, but with less snow.

The plateaus, whose climate is not influenced by the lake, have an annual average temperature of 3 to 7 ° C with long winters and average January temperatures of −21 ° C. Here the ground often remains frozen even in summer. Precipitation ranges from 200 to 300 mm per year, most of it falling in the form of snow.

economy

View into the Kumtor mine

The economic relevance of the Issyk Oil area lies primarily in the region's raw material deposits. The Kumtor mine is the largest Kyrgyz gold deposit in the region. The mine is the largest private employer in the country and generates between 10 and 12% of the Kyrgyz gross domestic product .

traffic

Only the north of the area is integrated into the Kyrgyz trunk road network, while the sparsely populated mountainous landscapes of the south are difficult to reach, and sometimes not at all in winter. The city of Balyktschy on the west bank of the Issyk Kul is connected to Bishkek by a railway line .

Administrative division

The Issyk Kul region is divided into five districts ( Rajons ). The following districts are located in Issyk Kul:
