Cholpon-Ata ( Kyrgyz Чолпоната ) is a seaside resort on the northern shore of Issyk Kul -Sees in Kyrgyzstan , 240 km east of the capital Bishkek and 135 kilometers west of Karakol .
economy
The year-round population is around 12,000. The place contains numerous hotels, sanatoriums and guest houses from the Soviet era to accommodate the many summer guests who found relaxation here during the Soviet era in organized mass vacations, today mostly vacationing in small groups or as family guests. Because of the relatively warm sea water, the flat beach and the reliably warm summer weather, Cholponata is again very popular with tourists from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan , and the view across the lake to the south of the mighty peaks of the Tianshan Mountains is impressive. However, considerable modernization investments would be necessary in order to attract more discerning guests from abroad. Many of the hotels are now owned by investors from Kazakhstan who are making their first renovations. The city's drinking water supply, which no longer met modern standards, particularly with regard to hygiene, is now being renovated with money from the World Bank .
traffic
The place is on the national road A 363, which leads from Balyktschy in the west along the northern shore of Lake Issyk Kul to Karakol in the east and then along the south shore back to Balyktschy.
The small Issyk-Kul International Airport ( IATA airport code : IKU, ICAO code : UCFL) , established in 2003, is located about 40 km west of Cholponata near the village of Tanchy or halfway to Balikchy. It has no instrument landing system and is only operational during the day.
Sports
Two billiards world championships took place in Cholponata; the Combined Pyramid World Cup 2014 and the Free Pyramid World Cup 2019 .
The rock carvings of Cholponata
Two kilometers northeast of the village is an archaeological site with around 2000 rock carvings , most of which date from the Skyten period (8th to 3rd centuries BC). 90% of the rock carvings depict animals such as ibex, horses and camels. The remaining drawings are mostly representations of hunting scenes. In addition to the rock carvings, there are stone circles, burial mounds, wall remains and stone sculptures. The rock carvings were restored in 2002 with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany.
