The Issyk Kul Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO recognized biosphere reserve in Kyrgyzstan.

location

The biosphere reserve is located in northeast Kyrgyzstan in the Tian Shan Mountains in the vicinity of the mountain lake Issykköl , after which it is named. With an area of more than 43,000 square kilometers, it covers almost the entire territory of the Issyk Kul Oblast and more than 20% of the national territory of Kyrgyzstan.

description

The area of the biosphere reserve encompasses a large number of different ecosystems that provide habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species, many of which are endemic here.

The surrounding mountains, including Kungej-Alatau north of the lake and Terskej-Alatau south of the lake, rise to 4,000 to 5,000 meters from the lake surface of the Issyk Kul , which is around 1,600 meters above sea level, and the Tian Shan central chain on the southeastern edge of the area is even even higher.

As a result, different types of vegetation from the subtropics to the tundra are represented as extra-zonal vegetation starting from the lakeshore . The high biodiversity of animal species in the various vegetation areas includes 11 reptile species, 54 mammal species and 267 bird species. 39 of them are on the Kyrgyzstan Red List .

Human activities in the area include agriculture, ranching, hunting and tourism. There are negative effects from industrial emissions from mining activities.

Establishment

The area was established as a national reserve in 1998. The main goal of the government of Kyrgyzstan is to develop ecologically sound land use practices and economic activities in this area. In 2001 it was recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO under the Man and the Biosphere program . In summary it says:

" The mountain region of the central Tian Shan around Lake Issyk-Kul is one of the last harmonious cultural landscapes in Central Asia that preserves natural habitats in combination with traditional culture ."
