License plate from the western province (front)
License plate from the southern province (back)

The license plates currently used in Sri Lanka were developed by the German Utsch AG and introduced in August 2000. The license plates begin with the Sri Lankan coat of arms and two reduced letters, which indicate the province of registration. This is followed by two more letters, a hyphen and four digits. A hologram badge is also attached above the line. Diplomatic license plates show the letters DP instead of the provincial letters . Front license plates have a white background and rear license plates have a yellow background. A modification of the German FE script is used as the font .
