Malaysian license plates are issued by the Malaysian Road Transport Department and usually show white text on a black background. The states on the Malay Peninsula use a slightly different system than the twostates of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo . The first letter of all signs indicates the corresponding state or federal territory.

system

Malay Peninsula

The 11 states and two federal territories on the Malay Peninsula typically use three-letter and four-digit license plates.

In September 2013, the last possible combination was awarded in the capital Kuala Lumpur with WYY 9999. As a result, the system was converted to model W 1234 A. You started with the combination W 1 A. After reaching W 9999 Y, another serial letter according to the pattern WA 1234 A is added.

Vehicles in the Langkawi Free Trade Zone are given license plates with the abbreviation KV . This is followed by four digits and a serial letter.

The federal territory of Putrajaya uses signs consisting of the full name and a maximum of four additional digits.

Sabah and Sarawak

In the two East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak , the license plates originally consisted of two letters and four digits. As with all signs, the first letter denotes the state (Q for Sarawak and S for Sabah). The exact origin within the state is encoded by the second letter. After this system was exhausted, another letter was introduced at the end. In the meantime, the combinations of this scheme in the first regions have been used up, so that another letter had to be added according to the pattern ABC 1234 D.

The federal territory of Labuan has been using signs similar to the West Malaysian areas since it was separated from Sabah.

License plate types

License plates for taxis

License plates for taxis show black letters on a white background. They consist of three letters and four digits. In local taxis, the first letter is always an H for English. hire , the second indicates the respective state. National taxis use combinations of the normal series.

The Kuala Lumpur Airport limousine fleet uses white license plates that read LIMO in black , followed by a maximum of four digits and the state letter.

Diplomatic plates

Diplomatic license plates on vehicles of the Diplomatic Corps and the United Nations show white letters on a red background. They begin with a maximum three-digit number that indicates the country of origin of the mission. A hyphen is followed by two digits that indicate the status of the vehicle owner, and another hyphen. The sign closes with the letters DC for engl. Diplomatic Corps or UN for United Nations . For the consular corps , black plates with white letters are issued. They end with the letters CC for engl. Consular Corps .

Dealer identification

Signs for the short-term registration of unregistered (new) vehicles have white or silver-colored letters on a blue background. They start with the letter of the state, followed by four digits and one more letter. In Kuala Lumpur, the dealer signs were changed in September 2013, because the introduction of the new scheme for serial number plates resulted in overlaps. From now on, dealer signs from the capital show the characters W / TP or W / TS at the beginning.

Military license plate

The Malaysian armed forces also use black license plates with white letters. The signs show one or two letters and a maximum of four digits. All signs start with Z . In the case of newer license plates, the affiliation to the armed forces can be read from the second letter. The combinations ZA to ZD are used for the army . The following are also used: ZL for the Navy , ZU for the Air Force and ZZ for vehicles of the Ministry of Defense.
