Georgian license plates were introduced in 1993. They correspond to the European standard size and usually show black letters on a white background. The number plates currently in use have been issued since September 1, 2014.

Systematics

The current signs show a blue bar with the nationality symbol GE and the flag of Georgia on the left edge and thus adapt to the Euro plate . With regard to the combinations, the license plates are based on the French and Italian models according to the continuous pattern AB-123-CD. Only letters from the Latin alphabet are used. The combination does not provide any information about the exact origin of the vehicle. A hologram sticker appears on the right-hand edge to protect against forgeries.

From 1993 to 2014, the license plate consisted of three letters, a hyphen and three digits in DIN script (e.g. ABC-123). In the lower left corner the nationality symbol GEO appeared (from September 2010 GE ). Above that, the flag of Georgia was depicted on many license plates. The change in the national flag from 2004 was implemented accordingly on the license plates.

Originally, the first letter coded the approval district. This system was soon abandoned, however, and from then on the license plates were assigned in blocks or for a fee in any desired combination, if free. Some companies had bought up all possible combinations with the three-letter abbreviations corresponding to their company name (for example the largest private bank in the country, the TBC Bank , all 999 license plates with TBC or the television station Mse TV according to the English transcription all license plates with MZE ). Ambulances often had license plates with the letters PSP , the abbreviation of a pharmaceutical company acting as a sponsor , fire brigade and other emergency vehicles had license plates with SOS .

Region letters used initially

Before independence, the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, as part of the Soviet Union, used Soviet license plates .

License plate types

Trailers and construction machines have had signs according to the pattern since 2014 AB-123-A, two-wheelers have four digits after two letters (scheme CC-1234). In both cases there are two-line signs.

Temporary license plates begin with the letters GA, GE or GG (scheme GG-1234) followed by four digits. Temporary license plates have red letters on a white background.

From 1993 to 2014, trailers and construction machines had signs according to the pattern AB-123, two-wheelers had four digits after two letters (scheme CC-1234). In both cases there are two-line signs. Temporary license plates began with the letters TG, TT or TR followed by four digits.

Transit and export signs show four digits, followed by a vertical red bar with the month and year. Finally two letters appear. These signs are made of paper or adhesive film.

Diplomatic license plates have a red background and white writing. They start with a three-digit serial number. This is followed by the letters D or CMD and the coding of the country of origin with three digits. The order of the countries depends on the date of the embassy opening, which is why 001 stands for Germany , 002 for the USA and 003 for Turkey . Technical and administrative staff are given green signs with the letters AS . Both types of signs exist in an older, darker version and the current, lighter version with a different font.

The Georgian Armed Forces use black license plates with white letters. The license plates consist of two letters followed by three digits. On the left side there is a green bar with the letters GA .

The European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM), which has also been active in Georgia since 2008, has its own signs. They show the letters EUMM in white on a light blue background, followed by a consecutive number.

The breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia issue their own license plates, which are prohibited in the Georgian heartland. In return, the authorities in these areas do not recognize Georgian license plates.

Abkhazia

Abkhaz license plates are based on Russian license plates . They show a small letter of the Cyrillic alphabet , three digits and another two smaller Cyrillic letters. However, only those twelve letters are used that occur in a similar form in the Latin alphabet (А, Б, В, Е, К, М, Н, О, Р, С, Т, У, Х). On the right edge the flag of Abkhazia and the letters ABH can be seen. Trailer license plates consist of two letters and four digits. The diplomatic license plates also correspond to the Russian model: They use white writing on a red background. The signs begin with three digits that encode the country of origin (001 for Russia , 002 for South Ossetia,). This is followed by the letters D or CD and a consecutive serial number. The letters ABH appear in a separate field on the right-hand side .

South Ossetia

Older license plates from South Ossetia are similar to those used in the former Soviet Union . They consist of four digits followed by the Cyrillic letters ЮОР ( Юго-Осетинская Республика , Russian for South Ossetian Republic ) and show no further symbols. In the meantime - as in Abkhazia - modern license plates are issued according to the Russian pattern, in which again only those Cyrillic letters are used that have a Latin counterpart. On the left they show the flag of South Ossetia and the letters RSO for Republic of South Ossetia . This is followed by a letter, three digits and another two letters. As in the Russian Federation, government vehicles have special license plates. They show the flag without letters on the left edge. Army and South Ossetian Defense Ministry vehicles have black signs with white writing on them. The license plate consists of four digits and two letters. The national flag is shown again on the right edge.
