The current Afghan license plates were introduced in 2004 and have been slightly modified since then. The signs have a size of 390 × 160 mm and usually show black letters on a white background. The label consists of three letters that indicate the province of origin of the vehicle, a continuous sequence of digits and one or more letters that indicate the status of the vehicle ( PRV or SH for private vehicles, L for trucks). Letters and digits are shown in Arabic characters in the upper line and in Latin characters in the lower line . Between the two inscriptions there is a picture of the presidential palace in Kabul on the left edge and, in the case of newer signs, a hologram plaque on the right edge.
License plates for vehicles used for public transport have a yellow background. The letters B for bus or T for taxi are used on the right.

Older license plates only showed Arabic characters. They started with a letter followed by four digits. At the end the full name of the province appeared.
