Dschuzdschan (other spellings: Jowsjan , Jowzjan , Jawzjan , Jozjan , Cövzcan ; Pashto / Dari :جوزجان Jauzjan , DMG Djôzdjân ) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan , which is located in the north of the country.
The province was created in 1958 and until April 1964 bore the name of the provincial capital Scheberghan / Schiberghan.
Juzdschan has an area of 11,798 km². The 477,000 inhabitants are mainly Uzbeks and Turkmens , mainly because of their proximity to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan . There are also a considerable number of Hazara , some Tajiks , but hardly any Pashtuns .
Important cities in the province are, besides the university town of Sheberghan (40,800 inhabitants), Sang-i Charak (15,800), Aqchah (18,100), and Qarqin (7,200).
The famous doctor Abu Ubaid Abd al-Wahid al-Juzdschani , the chronicler Minhādsch ad-Dīn Jūzdschānī and the general and politician Raschid Dostum come from the province of Juzdschan .
Administrative division
The province of Juzdschan is divided into eleven districts:
Aqchah, Darzab, Fayzabad, Khamyab, Khaniqa, Khwaja Du Koh, Mardyan, Mingajik, Qarqin, Qush Tepa and Scheberghan.
