The license plate of Bhutan are from the Road Safety and Transport Authority awarded. Most of the license plates show characters of the Bhutanese official language Dzongkha on the upper edge . The number plates are structured according to the following scheme XX-1-X1111, whereby the number between the two hyphens provides more information about the origin of the vehicle. The type of vehicle can be specified in more detail using the first two letters and the color of the sign.

Older license plates show three letters and four digits, whereby the origin can be read from the letters.

Diplomatic license plates have white letters on a blue background. As is customary internationally, they show the letters CD between two groups of numbers.
In addition, the Royal Bodyguard also has its own license plates. They show the letters RBG for Royal Bodyguard . A sequential number follows. Half of the background is black and the other half is based on the flag of Bhutan .
