License plate (Oman)
The current license plates of the Sultanate of Oman have been in existence since 2001.
Current license plate system
On January 6, 2001, a new labeling system was introduced. The old license plates could continue to be used until the end of February 2002.
License plate for privately and commercially used vehicles
License plates for privately used vehicles are written in black on a yellow reflective background. Commercial vehicles, taxis, driving school and rental vehicles have a red sign with white lettering. They are available in the dimensions 521 × 114 mm and 362 × 114 mm (probably since 2003 305 × 114 mm). DIN 1451 medium script is used as the font for the Arabic numerals .
Both license plate types are divided into three parts. On the right is the word Oman in Arabic script ( Arabic عمان, DMG ʿumān ). In the central part of the shield are one or two letters in Arabic (above) and Latin (below). In the left part there is a number with up to five digits in Arabic numerals. All new license plates have a small security hologram.
According to official information, the letter combinations for privately used vehicles are assigned arbitrarily, but there are indications that the first letter still stands for the issuing region ( mintaqa , Pl. Manatiq ) or the issuing governorate ( muhafaza , Pl. Muhafazat ). Only the following letters are assigned: A ( Arabic ا, DMG ā ), B ( Arabic ب, DMG b ), D ( Arabic د, DMG d ), H ( Arabic ح, DMG ḥ ), M ( Arabic م, DMG m ), R ( Arabic ر, DMG r ), S ( Arabic س, DMG s ), W ( Arabic و, DMG w ), Y ( Arabic ي, DMG y ).
The following letters are intended for certain types of approval:
- K ( Arabic ك, DMG k ), KA and KB for taxis
- KK ( Arabic ك ك, DMG kk ) for vehicles that are used for passenger transport with more than 12 seats or that are intended for combined passenger and freight transport
- T ( Arabic ط, DMG ṭ ) for self-driven rental cars and
- TT ( Arabic ط ط, DMG ṭṭ ) for driving school vehicles
The letter K ( Arabic ك, DMG k ) is reserved as the second letter for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t. The same applies to the letter L ( Arabic ل, DMG l ), which is also used for motorcycle license plates.
The letters are assigned in the following order: First, identifiers with just one letter (e.g. Y) are assigned. If this number range is exhausted, two-letter identifiers are issued. It starts with the double letter (e.g. YY) and then continues in descending alphabetical order (e.g. YW, YS, YR, YM, YH, YD, YB, YA). The numbers are assigned in ascending order. Custom license plates can be purchased from the registration office for a fee. Numbers that become free are reassigned after a certain waiting period.
Temporary and dealer tags
Green license plates with white lettering are issued for new cars and demonstration cars from car dealers. Temporary license plates for new cars show a month number at the bottom left and then the year and are only valid until the final yellow license plate is issued. The dealer numbers are valid for the year specified in the number.
