Sur ( Arabic صور, DMG Ṣūr ) is a city around 30 kilometers west of the easternmost point of the Sultanate of Oman near Ras al-Jinz . It is located on the Gulf of Oman 150 km southeast of the state capital Muscat . As of the 2003 census, Sur district had a population of 66,785. Sur is the capital of the Janub al-Sharqiyya governorate and also the capital of Wilaya Sur .

The city was an important trading center for trade with East Africa as early as the 6th century . After Sur came under the rule of the Portuguese in the 16th century , it experienced a new boom as a center for trade with India and East Africa after the liberation by Nasir ibn Murschid (1624-1649) . The city began to decline when Britain enforced a ban on the slave trade in the mid-19th century . When the Suez Canal was opened (1869) after the city was destroyed by the Wahhabis (1865) , Sur finally lost its importance for the Indian trade .

The long tradition of Sur as a seafaring town is still maintained today. The city is a center of the traditional construction of the dhows , i.e. the ships with which the trade trips to Africa and India were undertaken until the 19th century.

The university Sur University College and the Sur College of Applied Sciences , which is comparable to a technical college , are located in the village .

20 km north of Sur is the ruined city of Qalhat , or Galhat , which played an important role in the Kingdom of Ormus, a vassal state that was initially dependent on the Persian Empire and later on the Portuguese . UNESCO placed this site under special protection.
