Ras al-Jinz ( Arabic رأس الجنز Ra's al-Jinz , DMG raʾs al-ǧinz ; also Ras al-Jinz ) is a small place in today's Oman , which is located around 35 kilometers east of Sur by the sea. It is located eleven kilometers south of the tip of the Arabian Peninsula near Ras al-Hadd and is the easternmost point of the peninsula and the country.

Ras al-Jinz is best known to tourists for its beach and the sea ​​turtles that regularly lay eggs there.

history

At Ras al-Jinz, a French-Italian team has been running a Bronze Age , approx. 2200 to 1900 BC , since 1985 . Old port town excavated. A large adobe building with seven rooms came to light. These rooms opened onto a corridor. The building seems to have served as a craft business. There is evidence of the processing of mussels, turtle shells , flint, and eyeshadow made from magnesium ore.

Among the finds, around 20% of the pottery came from the Indus culture . There were also shards with Indus characters . The place was obviously a port in the Bronze Age, which the ships of the Indus culture called. Even today, Ras al-Jinz is an important landmark for ships coming from Pakistan .

In 1996, a nature reserve for sea ​​turtles was established. Since 2008 there has been a visitor center and museum that also offers night tours to the beach and accommodation for tourists.

The beach is an important breeding ground, especially for green turtles . The main time for egg-laying are the months May to September. However, adult females laying eggs and young animals can be observed on the beach all year round when they hatch, although not in as large numbers as in the main months.
