The license plate of Iran similar to the since 2005 Euro plate . The license plate is  read from right to left - according to the reading direction of the Persian written language . There is a divided field on the right edge. In the upper part is the country name "Iran" in Farsi . Below that is a two-digit Indo-Arabic number for the registration district in which the vehicle was registered. In the actual identification field, there are initially three Indo-Arabic numerals, followed by one or two letters of the Persian alphabet and two further Indo-Arabic numerals. There is a blue bar on the left, divided edge. In the upper part you can see the Iranian national flag . Below is the Latin lettering IR IRAN , which stands for the English abbreviation for Islamic Republic of Iran .

The color of the base of the license plate depended on the use of the vehicle. License plates for privately used vehicles are written in black on a white reflective background. Commercial vehicles, taxis, government vehicles, driving school and rental vehicles have a yellow sign with black letters. Government vehicles can be recognized by their white letters on a red background. Police vehicles have a green license plate with white letters. New license plates are to be introduced for vintage and military vehicles from November 2012.

Cross Border called a transit license plate is (Engl. Transit Number Plate ) is required. Transit license plates are only issued once per vehicle and are valid for the life of the vehicle. Until 2010, yellow signs with black letters were issued. They carried either the letter combination “TEH” or “IR”, each followed by five digits. They are still valid. However, a new series has been issued since September 10, 2010 (see illustration). The new transit license plates are a translation of the original license plate into Latin letters and numbers . The number for the relevant approval district is on the right-hand side in white letters on a blue background. This is followed by a three-digit black number on a white background from the right. This is followed by a white letter on a red background and then a two-digit black number on a white background. On the left, the logo of the Touring & Automobile Club of the Islamic Republic of IRAN (TACI) is shown on a blue background. The word mark of the Iranian automobile club is repeated at the bottom as white lettering on a blue background.
