Bandar Anzali ( Persian بندر انزلی, DMG Bandar-i Anzalī also Bandar-e Anzeli and before the Iranian Revolution Bandar Pahlawi /بندر پهلوی/ Bandar-i Pahlavī ) is a port city in the Iranian province of Gilan on the Caspian Sea and has 114,105 inhabitants (as of 2012).
Bandar Anzali is the most important Iranian trading port on the Caspian Sea. It is 354 kilometers by road to Tehran. Due to the continuous lowering of the water level in the Caspian Sea, constant dredging is necessary to keep the port open for small ships up to 1000 tons. The main port is at the entrance of a lagoon, with customs offices on the east side. On the west side is a modern summer resort.
The city was formerly known as Enzeli , later as Bandar Pahlawi or Bandar-e Pahlavī in honor of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi . During the Second World War it was the terminus of the Trans-Iranian Railway from Bandar-e Shahpur on the Persian Gulf, which was part of the Persian Corridor . After the overthrow of the Shah's regime, it was renamed back to Bandar-i Anzalī. There is also a Polish cemetery in Anzali (line of flight during World War II, 1942). It is the second largest Polish cemetery in Iran.
Attractions
The harbor with the fish market is interesting. From there, boat and fishing trips are possible in the river delta of the Sefid Rud or the inland water (Mordab) with its very varied flora and fauna. A specialty is the inexpensive sturgeon - the caviar is processed in the local state fishing station.
traffic
There is a ferry connection to Baku ( Azerbaijan ). Bandar Anzali has good road connections - the drive on country roads is still difficult and should only be done during the day.
Weather
Due to the location on the Caspian Sea north of the Elburs Mountains , there is a moderate climate with sometimes a lot of precipitation. In winter, however, Bandar Anzali can also experience snowfall.
