License plate (Tajikistan)
Tajik license plates usually have the pan-European dimension of 520 × 110 mm and black lettering on a white background. Since 2010 they have started with the flag of Tajikistan over the national symbol TJ . This is followed by four digits, two letters (reduced to 2014) and a two-digit code that indicates the relevant province.
Before 2010, the signs were very similar in appearance to the license plates of Russia . The sign began with a maximum of two reduced letters, using only those letters that occur in both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabet . This was followed by four digits and a vertical line which, as with the Russian license plates, delimited a field for specifying the origin of the vehicle. In that field there were two digits that encode the relevant province and, underneath, the Cyrillic letters РТ for Russian Республика Таджикистан (German Republic of Tajikistan ). For vehicles that are not registered to a private person, the sign began with the combination of numbers followed by the letter or letters.
Government license plates consisted of a combination of numbers followed by the letters РТ . Instead of the field of origin, the Tajik national flag was shown. Diplomatic license plates had white letters on a red background. They showed three digits, the letter D and another three digits.
Before independence, the Tajik SSR, as part of the Soviet Union, used Soviet license plates .
