The Erich Utsch AG is one of the world's leading producers of motor vehicle registration . The company is based in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The company was founded in 1961 as a small family business by Erich Utsch, who gave the company its name. In the initial phase, a converted wine press was used as the stamping press. In 1969, after the death of his father, Manfred Utsch took over the management of the company. In 2001 Erich Utsch KG was converted into a non-listed stock corporation, the majority of which are family-owned. Today Erich Utsch AG is active in over 130 countries and currently has almost 400 employees in the Utsch Group worldwide.

In 1991 the subsidiary Utsch-Recycling was founded, which specializes in the disposal of end-of-life vehicles and license plates. In the same year Ireland, as a pioneer in the EC, introduced the then new Euro plate. Utsch supplied the sample plates for the government bill and equipped the Irish embossing companies in Ireland with the technical aids.

Since 1995 Erich Utsch AG has been offering labels with additional security features such as national emblems, laser codes, watermarks and holograms to prevent counterfeiting for the international market. In 2002, export sales exceeded domestic sales for the first time.

In 2008, the Egyptian Ministry of Finance in Cairo commissioned Erich Utsch AG with the production and delivery of nine million license plates. The sales volume for this was EUR 24.8 million. After the revolution in Egypt in 2011 , the former members of the government involved in this deal were charged with corruption , as the award was allegedly carried out without a tender and at inflated prices. On July 12, 2011, ex-prime minister Ahmed Nasif, ex-interior minister Habib al-Adli and ex-finance minister Yussuf Butros Ghali were convicted by an Egyptian court in Cairo. In February 2015, Ahmed Nasif and Habib al-Adli were acquitted of the alleged corruption in an appeal process. At the same time, the judgment against a German employee of the license plate manufacturer Utsch was overturned.

Also in 2008, an order worth EUR 8.5 million was signed with the Iraqi government. In another major order with a volume of 20 million euros, Erich Utsch AG delivered four million license plates to Romania from 2009 to 2012.

In 2012 Erich Utsch AG produced around 50 million license plates worldwide.

In 2016 the majority of shares previously owned by Manfred Utsch was sold to a Swedish and an Australian group of companies.

As part of its strategic realignment, Erich Utsch AG acquired the majority of the shares in the Australian LicenSys Pty Ltd. at the end of 2018. ("LicenSys") and became the market leader in Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. At the beginning of 2020, Erich Utsch AG entered into a partnership with the British company Hills Numberplates Ltd. Both partners together now form the largest group of companies in the world in the license plate market.

Products

Since the foundation, the core business has been the production of license plates . While initially only the German market was served, the international market was added later. In addition, machines, tools and systems for manufacturing license plates are produced. This includes block and counter pressure tools, embossing presses, hot stamping machines, laminators and laser coding devices.

The automatic embossing press (APP) developed and patented by Utsch enables the computer-controlled, fully automatic production of license plates in large numbers. The previously entered legends for pairs of signs are processed automatically by the system. The APP is used all over the world, for example in the Italian state printing and minting establishment, the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Foggia , labels for all of Italy are produced.

The network-compatible U-Press introduced by Utsch in 2013 offers innovations such as biometric login, optical control of the circuit boards used and complete documentation of all work processes. The U-Press closes the gap between manual and automatic embossing presses and is intended to prevent conscious and unconscious incorrect embossing.

Since 1985, Erich Utsch AG has also been offering license plate frames for screwless fastening of license plates on vehicles from almost all manufacturers. In 2008 Utsch launched an illuminated license plate holder called Erulux.
