Nikephorus Proteuon

Nikephoros , nickname Proteuon ("the first", Middle Greek Νικηφόρος ὁ Πρωτεύων ; † after January 1055), was a Byzantine governor and in January 1055 briefly heir to the throne of Emperor Constantine IX.

Life

Nikephorus officiated under Constantine IX. as Dux of the topic Bulgaria . When the sonless emperor was dying at the beginning of January 1055, several prominent court dignitaries convinced him that his sister-in-law Theodora III reigned. wanted to prevent Nikephorus from being called to the palace in Constantinople to appoint him heir to the throne. However, Theodora managed to have the rival arrested in Thessaloniki . Nikephorus was sheared to become a monk and banished to the monastery of Kuzenas near Magnesia on Sipylos in the theme of Thrakesion . After Constantine's death on January 11, 1055, Theodora, who had ruled briefly in 1042 together with her sister Zoë (who died in 1050) , ascended the Byzantine throne for the second time.
