The internal designation of the first Mazda6 is GG for the four-door notchback sedan and the five-door hatchback ("Sport") and GY for the station wagon ("Sport station wagon") and thus follows in the letter sequence of the previous model Mazda 626 / Capella (GF / GW).

For Europe, Japan, Australia and parts of Asia, the Mazda6 is produced in the Japanese plants in Hiroshima and Hōfu . In February 2002 the first Mazda6 rolled off the production line for Europe in Hōfu.

The car was available in European dealerships from June 2002. The Mazda6 was also available as an all-wheel drive model from August 2002 for both Japan and Europe.

In North America, the car was offered from January 2003, with production starting on October 1, 2002 at Auto Alliance International (AAI - a joint venture between Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation since 1992) in Flat Rock ( Michigan ) . In addition, production for the South American market is carried out in Bogotá ( Colombia ). Production for the Chinese market has been running since March 2003 in Changchun ( Jilin Province ) at FAW Car Company Limited.

By March 2006, over a million units had been produced worldwide. No Mazda model before has reached this level in such a short time since its introduction.

The car won over 120 comparative tests and awards and, among other things, it was the first model to pass the 100,000 km endurance test by “ Auto Bild ” without fail. In 2003 the Mazda6 was awarded second place as Car of the Year (behind the Renault Mégane) and by November 2002 had already received 23 awards in 16 countries worldwide.

Facelift

In June 2005 the series (now type GG1 or GY1) received a facelift , which can be recognized by a new front apron with silver-colored applications, a slightly changed radiator grille and a subtle change to the rear apron. Revised headlights and taillights , retouching in the interior with new colors and fabrics, new exterior paintwork, revised (diesel) engines (increased performance with less consumption) and 6-speed manual transmission are among the other innovations.

From September 2005, the diesel models were also equipped with a maintenance-free soot particle filter as standard . In August 2006, the upgraded version Mazda6 MPS with all-wheel drive appeared.

Production of the first generation was ended in August 2007. Only for the Chinese market is the first generation still being manufactured in cooperation with FAW (status: May 2014). The successor was presented in September 2007 at the 62nd IAA in Frankfurt.

The successor with the internal abbreviation GH follows the design of the new line of the Mazda2 of the second generation and has only grown slightly in size. The official presentation took place in September 2007 at the IAA in Frankfurt.

For the market launch in February 2008 Mazda first presented the notchback and hatchback variant, the station wagon came to dealers in April 2008. In the United Arab Emirates, the new model is offered under the name "Mazda6 Ultra". Here it is only sold with the 3.7 liter V6 petrol engine.

The engines have been slightly revised: Otto engines from 88 kW (120 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS) are available as well as several diesels with outputs from 92 kW (125 PS) to 136 kW (185 PS). Mazda is continuing the lightweight construction strategy that began with the Mazda2 . Depending on the variant, the new Mazda6 should be around 35 kg lighter than its predecessor. For this reason too, Mazda was able to improve fuel consumption by up to 12%. With the basic gasoline engine a consumption of 6.8 l / 100 km and with the diesel engine a value of 5.6 l / 100 km should be possible. In the Exclusive equipment variant , a lane change assistant (RVM) is also available within the Touring package.

The Mazda6 shares some components with the Ford Mondeo presented in spring 2007 . Classic platform sharing, as is common in other corporations, does not exist at Mazda, Ford and Co. Only individual components are used among each other, which is why the second generation Mazda6 is based more on its predecessor than on the Ford Mondeo.

Facelift

In spring 2010 the Mazda6 received a subtle facelift. A new two-liter petrol engine was introduced, which leads to lower consumption values and also meets the Euro 5 emissions standard . Visually, headlights, grille and bumpers at the front and rear have been modified.

Production of the second generation was discontinued at the end of 2012.

The third generation of the Mazda6 celebrated its world premiere as a notchback sedan at the Moscow Motor Show in August 2012. It is the second model after the CX-5 that Mazda's new Kodo design line carries.

The market launch in Germany took place on February 2, 2013. The station wagon appeared at the same time as the notchback sedan, but it is shorter than this. Nevertheless, there is a growth in length compared to the second generation. The hatchback variant, however, was deleted without replacement. As a special feature, Mazda is offering the estate variant for the first time at the same price as the sedan.

In addition to the body and the engines of the new SKYACTIV technology, there are also numerous new technical functions, including a city emergency braking assistant that automatically brakes the car in the event of danger or at low speed.

Mazda is also introducing the so-called i-ELOOP (Intelligent Energy Loop) system; This converts the kinetic energy of the carriage during the braking or coasting into electrical energy and stores it in a capacitor . This energy is then also available to the on-board electronics. This relieves the engine and enables it to use a greater proportion of its power for propulsion, which also has a fuel-saving effect.

technology

The engines of the third generation Mazda6 are units of the new SKYACTIV technology from Mazda. Gasoline engines with a displacement of 2 and 2.5 liters (146, 165 and 192 hp) and a 2.2-liter diesel engine in two output levels (150 and 175 hp) are used. The diesel engine has a balancer shaft . From July 2018, they will meet the Euro 6d-Temp emissions standard through several changes .

Outside Europe, a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 231 hp has also been available since 2018.

The body has grown significantly compared to its predecessor, as there is only one model in the world - another larger version was recently offered in North America.

The value is between 0.26 (sedan) and 0.28 (station wagon).

The Mazda6 has disc brakes on all wheels, with the front wheels being internally ventilated. Lower triangular wishbones, MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar are used on the front axle . The steering is a rack-and-pinion steering with speed-dependent, electrical power assistance. The rear axle has independent suspension on trailing arms, lower wishbones and upper arm, as well as an anti-roll bar.

Facelift

In February 2015, the Mazda6 received a facelift. Among other things, there is now an all-wheel drive version for the diesel, but only as a station wagon. The cockpit was visually modernized with a flatter dashboard and the no longer fully integrated display. The leather interior now also includes arm rests in the doors, door handles, the center tunnel and parts of the dashboard. The exterior now looks even sportier. A new cruise control and safety systems complete the model.

In 2016, the Mazda6 received another revision for the 2017 model year and will henceforth run under the internal type designation GL . The exterior mirrors, the steering wheel (with steering wheel heating for higher equipment lines), better sound insulation and minor updates to the assistance systems have all been renewed. The software-based driving dynamics control G-Vectoring Control (GVC) is new . In terms of drive systems, the 2.2-liter diesel has been redesigned to absorb vibrations and minimize the noise typical of diesel frequencies, which Mazda calls Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control . Further mass dampers used in the piston.

Facelift from 2017

Another facelift was presented at the 2017 LA Auto Show . The press photos showed that the radiator grille now has a honeycomb structure and the headlights have been redesigned. Chrome elements are located under the headlights and in the former position of the fog lights, which are instead found in the LED main headlights. This change also results in a lighting range that is 80 m greater. In the most expensive version, Sports-Line , they are designed as matrix LED headlights . In the notchback version, the chrome strip in the trunk lid no longer runs out above the rear lights, but at the height of the middle of the rear lights.

There were also slight changes in the interior that affect the position and size of the air vents; a head-up display projecting into the windscreen is standard regardless of the equipment variant.

Technical changes concern the introduction of additional assistance systems and, in the case of the engines, cylinder deactivation in the 141 kW (192 PS) variant of the 2.5-liter gasoline engine. In addition, the noise level in the interior could be further improved through thicker floor panels and additional insulation material in the center tunnel. Based on the last-mentioned engine variant, an exhaust-gas-charged 184 kW (250 PS) version will appear for markets not yet specified.

Motorsport

The race is on Continental Racing slicks with 285/45 R18 (front) and 305/45 R18 with BBS rims. Braking is done with Alcon 355 mm (front) and 328 mm (rear).
