The term Kodo (from Japanese roughly: "Heartbeat", subtitle: Soul of Motion ) describes the design of current Mazda models . The design goes back to Ikuo Maeda, who has been Mazda’s design director since 2009.

history

The design was introduced as the successor to the Nagare design, which was first presented in 2007 with the eponymous Mazda Nagare and was subsequently used on the Mazda Ryuga and the Mazda Hakaze, among others . With the 2010 Mazda Shinari concept vehicle, the Kodo design was introduced.

description

According to Mazda, the design language of Kodo is inspired by the "explosive movement of animals" and should "convey external sharpness" with its lines. Predators that were about to jump also served as models and sources of inspiration.

The central elements of Kodo are the radiator grille , the lines of which extend sideways to the sides of the vehicle, and the passenger cell, which is set far to the rear, with its sloping A-pillars. The typical design also includes large wheels, a wide track and a long wheelbase with short body overhangs. The narrow headlights, which are supposed to show a certain sharpness with a kind of evil eye , are also part of the Kodo design.

Awards

Since its introduction in 2010, the Kodo design has received numerous awards. For example, the Mazda MX-5 in the RF version with targa roof and also the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-3 have won the Red Dot Design Award several times in the “Product Design / Automobile, Transport” category.
