The city ​​fortification Waidhofen an der Ybbs is the city ​​fortification in the municipality Waidhofen an der Ybbs in Lower Austria .

history

From 1258 to 1279, a double curtain wall was built under Bishop Konrad II of Freising. The fortification was expanded from 1390 to 1410 under Bishop Berthold von Wehingen.

The inner wall goes from the city castle (castle) and city parish church in the northwest along the outer western rear border of the lower town square and ends south at Hohen Markt or runs from north over the Ybbs at Fuchsluegg (away) to the east and ends over the moat at High market. The complex originally had 13 towers and three gates.

The additional wall section encloses the former citizen hospital with the citizen hospital church and the hospital gate in front of the Weyrer-Tor.

Buildings

  • The city wall is partly free-standing or overbuilt in the north. Another overbuilt wall section runs between the parcels of Oberer and Unterer Stadtplatz, a remnant of a defensive tower has been preserved in the house at Oberer Stadtplatz no.31, another remnant of the tower is in the house at Hoher Markt no.10 or Hörtlergasse no.9.

  • Amstettner gate: documented in 1273, closed in 1846.
  • Weyrer-Tor: slept from 1390 to 1410 and 1872.
  • Spital-Tor: In front of the Weyrer-Tor because the citizen hospital was included in the fortification.
