Sacro Cuore del Suffragio (" Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Intercession "), also Sacro Cuore di Gesù in Prati , is a Catholic parish church in the Prati district of Rome . The neo-Gothic church, built from 1894 to 1917 according to plans by Giuseppe Gualandi , stands on the banks of the Tiber in the immediate vicinity of the Palace of Justice and is visible from afar with its elaborately designed facade. The parish belonging to it is led by the religious order of the Sacred Heart Missionaries .

history

Victor Jouët (1839–1912), a French Sacred Heart missionary, founded the Associazione del Sacro Cuore di Gesù per il suffragio delle anime del Purgatorio ("Association of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the intercession of the poor souls in purgatory ") in Rome . In 1893, with the help of wealthy supporters, he bought a piece of land on the banks of the Tiber in order to build a larger church next to the existing chapel of the Vergine del Rosario ("Virgin of the Rosary"). A fire broke out in the chapel during construction. When the fire was out, the outline of a sad-looking face remained on a pilaster in the chancel. Jouët saw in it the manifestation of a soul in purgatory. He began to travel through Europe and track down similar phenomena, sooty prints of human limbs on a wide variety of objects with the related stories, some of which were dramatic. For his collection, he set up the Museo Cristiano dell'Oltretomba ("Christian Beyond Museum") next to the church , later called the Museo delle anime del Purgatorio . Significantly reduced by his successor in office, the small exhibition is still one of Rome's curiosities today.

The church was not completed until after JOUETS death and on All Saints' Day 1917 benediziert and opened. At the same time, the associated parish was established, which is still run by Sacred Heart missionaries to this day.

Architecture and equipment

Sacro Cuore is designed in "transalpine", high Gothic forms that are rarely found in Rome. In the city, the church is also called "Little Milan Cathedral ". It is a small three-aisled basilica with cross vaults and polygonal closing chorus . The exterior is richly decorated with pinnacles and tracery windows . The portal facade is also crowned with a filigree octagonal roof turret and a gallery of saints - seven above the central nave, three each above the side aisles. In the eyelashes of the portal there is a leaning statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the main window rises to that in many cases broken rose window ends. Because of the layout of the property on Uferstrasse, the facade is slightly inclined to the building axis. The interior fittings from the turn of the 20th century have largely been preserved.

Individual evidence

  1. The event is told in different versions. Various sources know the exact date - September 15 or November 15, 1897 - others declare the date, including the year, to be unknown. Various sources speak of the chapel burning down, others only speak of a fire in the chancel. Various sources know of the "appearance" of the deceased and of many witnesses to the event, others only know that Jouët discovered and interpreted the "face" after the fire. Various sources indicate that by this time the new church was already under construction, others that the event was the motivation for the church to be built ( 1 , 2 , 3 ).
  2. Length 39 m, width and height (without roof turrets) 20 m ( Massimo Asquini )
