The Große Koppenkarstein can be reached from the mountain station of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn , from the Austriahütte , the Guttenberghaus or the Simonyhütte .

The summit of the Koppenkarstein can be reached via via ferrata:

  • Via the Westgrat via ferrata (250 m, difficulty B / C)
  • Via the Irg-2 via ferrata (350 m, difficulty C / D)

Alpine experience, via ferrata and, if necessary, glacier equipment are required for the ascent.

The first documented ascent of the Großer Koppenkarstein took place on August 20, 1873 by Arthur Simony and Josef Zauner from Hallstatt over the north face ( II + ), a route that is no longer in use today.

The "Irg" climbing routes

In 2016, the Irg-1 via ferrata had to be torn down due to disagreements between the states of Upper Austria and Styria . Alternatively, the Irg-2 via ferrata (1250 m, C / D) was built, the entrance to which is a few hundred meters to the west. The name goes back to the first ascent of the Dachstein south face, Georg "Irg" Steiner .
