List of train stations in Italy |
The train station Roma San Pietro is a regional station in Rome . It takes its name from St. Peter's Basilica ( Italian : Basilica di San Pietro ) in the nearby Vatican City.
Geographical location
The Roma San Pietro train station is a good 700 meters south of St. Peter's Square in the Roman Aurelio district , for which it is an important traffic junction. It is located on the railway lines Roma-Livorno-Pisa , Roma Capranica-Viterbo , offering the Vatican state railway connection to the Italian railway network.
history
The station was opened on April 29, 1894 as a stop on the route to Viterbo . At that time it had two tracks and a station building . Despite its location on a branch line, it was used by a relatively large number of passengers because pilgrims can easily reach the sites of the Vatican from here .
The Roma San Pietro train station gave the impression of a rural train station due to its location and the reception building. In the middle of the 20th century it was therefore a popular location for films. Numerous actors and directors such as Totò , Deaf , Virna Lisi and Buzzanca recorded scenes there in black and white .
With the new Tyrrhenian railway connection built in 1990 and the associated electrification, the number of station tracks was increased to 5 and therefore a pedestrian underpass was built. On the occasion of the Holy Year 2000 and the simultaneous reopening of the line to Viterbo, the station received new platforms and two elevators.
Structure and facilities
The station is operated by the Italian Railways . Its reception building has a waiting room and ticket office . At the northern end of the station, the track of the Vatican State Railway branches off to the Vatican City station.
service
The station is served by Trenitalia regional trains as part of the transport service contract with the Lazio region . Between 2000 and 2006, Roma San Pietro was the terminus of half of all trains on the Rome – Cesano – Viterbo connection . Thereafter, the San Pietro – Ostiense line was expanded to include another tunnel with the Roma Quattro Venti stop . Since then, the San Pietro – Tiburtina and San Pietro – Roma Termini tracks have been running separately between San Pietro and Tuscolana.
