history

Savelli's story begins in the 17th century. After a terrible earthquake in 1638, many families fled their destroyed villages and found refuge in the mountains, in the previously uninhabited area of Scalzaporri in the Verzino region, which belonged to the fief of the Prince of Cariati . Out of gratitude, people named their new home after his wife, Carlotta Savelli .

In 1813 King Gioacchino finally appointed Murat Savelli to be an independent municipality belonging to the province of Cosenza . Three years later, on May 1, 1816, Ferdinand I decided to redistribute the provinces so that Savelli belonged to Catanzaro from then on . This assignment lasted for a long time until the new province of Crotone was founded on March 27, 1992 , to which Savelli still belongs to this day.

politics

The local elections on April 14, 2008 were won by the democratic PD with 75% of the vote, making Francesco Spina the current mayor of Savelli. He replaces Angela Caligiuri after twelve years in office.
