Cutro is a south-eastern Italian municipality in the Crotone Province in Calabria . The community has 10,108 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The municipality borders directly on the province of Catanzaro . It is located about 12.5 kilometers west-southwest of Crotone and about 37 kilometers northeast-north of Catanzaro . It is about 10 kilometers to the Ionian Sea . The Esaro rises near Cutro .
history
Cutro is a Greek foundation ( Greek : Kyterion ) and was part of the Magna Graecia . Cutro has held the title of Città (city) since 1575 . The community received the title from King Philip II of Spain , who bestowed the title because the chess master Giovanni Leonardo da Cutri from Cutro had impressed him very much at a chess tournament in Madrid . On March 8, 1832, an earthquake destroyed the village. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Calabrian region was literally depopulated by emigration to Germany and Lombardy .

Strada Statale 109 di Piccola Sila and Strada Statale 106 Jonica run through the municipality from the coast of the Gulf of Squillace . The place has a shunting station (San Leonardo di Cutro) and a train station on the Ferrovia Jonica from Reggio di Calabria to Taranto .
