Rino Gaetano
Rino Gaetano (born October 29, 1950 in Crotone , Calabria , as Salvatore Antonio Gaetano ; † June 2, 1981 in Rome ) was an Italian Cantautore (songwriter).
During his short career, which he began in Rome in 1973, he became known for his particularly sarcastic and surrealistic style, with idiosyncratic and often disrespectful lyrics, a special singing style and unusual performances. He became an ironic commentator on Italian society in the 1970s. He reached the height of his success with the song Gianna , which he presented at the Sanremo Festival in 1978 . Even after his untimely death, his popularity was unbroken and he achieved cult status in the Italian music scene.
life and career
Gaetano spent the first ten years of his life in Crotone, Calabria, before his family moved to Rome (in the Monte Sacro district ). His father worked as a porter and he himself attended a school for surveyors . In addition to school, he began to gain experience in the theater and with the guitar . His musical performances in the famous Roman artists' meeting Folk Studio aroused the interest of Vincenzo Micocci from the record company It and in 1973 he was able to release his first single I love you Marianna / Jaqueline , still under the pseudonym Kammamuri's. In 1974 his debut album Ingresso libero was finally released , but it went largely unnoticed.
The following year he reported back with the single Ma il cielo è semper più blu , which Gaetano attracted more attention for the first time. The second album Mio fratello è figlio unico (1976) contained the famous Berta filava in addition to the title track . With further publications, Gaetano succeeded in making a name for himself as an original artist who knows how to convey serious topics in an entertaining way. The album Aida was released in 1977, but in 1978 the musician finally made his breakthrough when he reached third place at the 1978 Sanremo Festival with the song Gianna . The single reached the top of the Italian charts ( Wolfgang Petry also achieved chart success in Germany with the German-language cover version Gianna (love in the car) ). Following the participation in Sanremo, the album Nuntereggaepiù was released .
After this success, Gaetano switched to the RCA label and released the album Resta vile maschio dove vai . With the summer hit Ahi Maria and the subsequent tours, his popularity continued to grow throughout Italy. But after the release of the next album E io ci sto (1980) he landed in an artistic crisis. Only a year later, the musician was 30 years old and died in a traffic accident on the Via Nomentana in Rome and was buried on the Campo di Verano .
Aftermath
Despite his short and abruptly ended career, Rino Gaetano was granted a great impact posthumously and he achieved downright cult status . After his death, a large number of books about the musician appeared, but also a number of compilations and tribute albums . Many of these publications achieved considerable chart success. Also tribute bands were founded and many of his songs were from other musicians gecovert .
In 1982 the Premio Rino Gaetano music prize was initiated in honor of Gaetano . In 2007, Rai 1 broadcast the two-part TV series Rino Gaetano - Ma il cielo è semper più blu , directed by Marco Turco ; the musician was played there by Claudio Santamaria . In 2008, a bronze statue of the artist was erected in his home town of Crotone , near the house where he was born . In addition, streets and squares were named after him all over Italy.
