Caccuri is an Italian municipality and city in the province of Crotone in Calabria with 1604 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Caccuri is located 55 km northwest of Crotone on the foothills of the Sila Mountains . The neighboring communities are Castelsilano , Cerenzia , Cotronei , Roccabernarda , San Giovanni in Fiore (CS), Santa Severina .

history

The castle was started in the 6th century. The place developed around the castle.

The castle

The Castello di Caccuri towers above the town, the castle was built by the Byzantines in the 6th century and renovated in the 8th century. The castle got its current appearance after a battle in 1651 and after a renovation in 1885. The tower Mastrigli is striking at the castle, it contains a water tank which is fed by an aqueduct . Inside you can visit the rooms of the Polissena Ruffo (wife of Francesco Sforza Duke of Milan).

Some of the buildings from the Middle Ages are still preserved in the old town. The sanctuary of San Rocco from 1908 is also located here, it was built in honor of the patron saint during an epidemic.

The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie dates from the 14th century. The frescoes from this period have been destroyed. Otherwise the church is built in the Renaissance style.

The abbey church

The Abbey of S. Maria del Soccorso Maria del Rescue was built by the Dominicans from 1518 ; later the Franciscans (OFM) lived in the monastery. The church of Maria del Rescue, also known as the Church of the Reformation, belongs to the monastery.
