Petilia Policastro is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 8889 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Crotone in Calabria . The parish is about 29.5 kilometers west-northwest of Crotone . Petilia Policastro borders the province of Cosenza . Since 2011 the municipality has had the title Città (city). The Tacina flows through the municipality . Part of the Parco nazionale della Sila runs through the municipality.
history
First settlements are likely to have existed in the area from the third or second century. Only under the Byzantines did the settlements gain in importance.

The Carsiche and Basiliane di San Demetrio caves are known nationwide.

The municipality is crossed by the Strada Statale 109 della Piccola Sila . Strada Statale 179 del Lago Ampollino joins this here . Between 1930 and 1972 there was a non-electrified railway line between Crotone and Petilia Policastro. It was a narrow-gauge railway (950 mm). The planned extension of the railway line from Cosenza to San Giovanni in Fiore to Petilia Policastro was never realized.
