Schmidt Another was a satire and comedy show on German television , moderated by Harald Schmidt and Herbert Feuerstein . The concept of the program came from Herbert Feuerstein, with the course of the broadcast showing clear parallels to late-night shows on US television; at the beginning of each show there was a short stand-up by Harald Schmidt and interviews with celebrities during the course of the show. There was often live music in the studio. Beginning with the first broadcast on December 16, 1990, the show was always broadcast on Sunday evening around 10 p.m. in West 3 , the then third program of the WDR . Due to the growing success, Schmidtanders was broadcast with episode 33 from January 15, 1994 on a slot on the first Saturday evening . The fiftieth and final episode ran on December 17, 1994.

Herbert Feuerstein was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize for the program in 1994 .

After Schmidt each other ended in 1995, an eight-part best-of moderated by Herbert Feuerstein was produced in the old studio setting. The programs were recorded in front of an audience and each lasted 45 minutes.

development

Episode 1 to 5 In the first broadcasts, interviews with “normal” people, who mostly had unusual hobbies, professions, qualities or (physical) characteristics, were an essential part of the show. The conversations were all conducted by Harald Schmidt. At the beginning of the show there was a short monologue by Schmidt and during the course of the show there were short live skits in which Schmidt also mainly appeared. In addition, there were often live broadcasts to locations in the city (e.g. pubs, discos, snack bars, etc.) where the guests or passers-by were briefly interviewed. In addition, was viewer question asked, the solution is always the letter N was. In the course of the show there were also several music numbers by professional musicians, all of which were played live from the 4th episode onwards. Herbert Feuerstein read a statistic aloud in each show and some feature films were shown. The set had three stages, one of which was rotatable, one contained Harald Schmidt's desk and one was hidden behind a garage door. In addition to Harald Schmidt's desk, there was already Herbert Feuerstein's desk, which, however, was not yet facing the audience, but stood against the wall. The audience sat on comfortable armchairs, sofas and chairs, some of which were arranged around tables and looked like a large living room; drinks were served during the broadcast. In addition to Schmidt and Feuerstein, Marga Maria Werny appeared as Grandma Sharif, who often brought in presents for the audience. The programs lasted about 90 minutes and were mostly broadcast once a month. Carlos Perón , who visibly acted in the upper part of the backdrop , provided the noises and music .

Episode 6 to 32 After six episodes the set was changed noticeably and the middle stage was enlarged significantly. Herbert Feuerstein was now sitting at his desk looking straight into the audience. The revolving stage disappeared, as did Carlos Perón. The main part of the program increasingly shifted from interviews to skits, in which Herbert Feuerstein also increasingly took part, and to feature films in which Schmidt, Feuerstein and "Grandma Sharif" mainly appeared. Schmidt's stand-up at the beginning of each broadcast was retained and his interview partners were now exclusively celebrities, whom he mostly interviewed at his desk. Herbert Feuerstein received a significantly larger share of the program and Grandma Sharif was “spoiled” from the 18th program onwards by a contribution by an amateur artist. The Schmidteinander-Hupfdolls were regular feature from the seventh edition and contributed short dance routines. The music continued to be played live, but only one artist or one band with several titles appeared per broadcast. The transmission time was reduced to 60 minutes from the eighth edition. For this, however, from 1992 onwards it was broadcast every 14 days, although some issues were no longer live. The armchairs and chairs were replaced by long benches from the 21st episode, which lost the living room atmosphere.

Episode 33 to 50 With the 33rd episode, the program changed from the third channel of WDR to ARD. The concept of the broadcast remained untouched. However, some skits were repeated because they could not be seen nationwide beforehand - at that time the third television programs were not yet available throughout Germany. Grandma Sharif increasingly appeared only once per broadcast in order to be “spoiled”. She was also seen in numerous feature films with Schmidt and Feuerstein until her death.

Recurring characters and elements of the show

Contributing and recurring characters

Live skits

Feature films

  • Comtessa Gunilla asks to table - Schmidt appears disguised as a countess.
  • Columbus discovers America
  • The Schmidt One Another Dance Theater - Always the same dance performance as a parody of an expressive dance to the music of Stravinsky's “Glorification of the Chosen” from Le sacre du printemps , performed by Schmidt and Feuerstein on different topics.
  • The official joke for various professional groups
  • Thank you, doctor - parody of doctor series like Die Schwarzwaldklinik
  • The Lucky family - satirical on daily soaps
  • Children's thoughts from Hänschen Klein - Feuerstein, disguised as a toddler, reflects his thoughts.
  • Peer Theer - Schmidt parodies an advice program with the somewhat yellowed atmosphere of the program English for Beginners (TV program) of the WDR school television and the overly clear pronunciation of the presenter Graham Pascoe in which he stretches the vowels excessively when speaking. The posts often end with a "Schaaadeeeeee".
  • Schmidt each other in other countries - after foreign currency has been inserted into Feuersteins decoder , a corresponding foreign version of the broadcast appears
  • Proverb research - Schmidt and Feuerstein examine "known and popular" proverbs .
  • Superstein - savior of housewives
  • Words for millions - Schmidt recites demanding texts in public places
  • Affectionate cops

Running Gags and Recurring Studio Actions

  • Flint imitates the sound that is made when cleaning a window pane.
  • Feuerstein plays the singing saw
  • Feuerstein plays the nasal flute - Feuerstein plays a recorder to which he does not feed air through his mouth, but through a nostril.
  • Flint lifts a submarine
  • Feuerstein shows the photo wall - Feuerstein shows photos sent in by viewers and pasted on a poster in such a way that they cannot be recognized.
  • Schmidt parodies Michael Schumacher and shows the "Schumi thumb"

  • Schmidt parodies moderators of the ARD advice programs and the ZDF cultural program aspects
  • Clapping, waving, etc. for grandma.
  • Grandma is pampered - Short appearance by (often bizarre) amateur artists for Grandma Sharif, who was sitting on a throne.
  • "Thank you" - Feuerstein throws 5 DM into the "fee piggy bank", and WDR director Nowottny thanks.
  • Spectators question - Schmidteinander guessing game, the solution almost always the letter N was. A caller could either win Schmidt each other fan articles or a bouillon cube. Often only a certain fringe group was allowed to call.
  • A stage employee ( Rüdiger Kreklau ) in overalls carries a clothes rack through the studio.
  • "Are you starting again!"
  • “Do we have statistics on this?” - Feuerstein reads out a bizarre statistic.

  • “What's wrong here?” - picture puzzle in which obvious mistakes were not the right solution.
  • WDR Intendant Nowottny appears disguised as a giant fly
  • "What is the capital of ...?"
  • "What is the name of the guitarist of Guns N 'Roses ?"
  • "Wolpers!" - one player in which Godehard Wolpers is beaten up after being blamed for a mistake.

Broadcast and DVD release

In 2004 a DVD box with the eight “best-of” episodes was released. They were published again as part of the 2014 DVD box "We celebrate Herbert Feuerstein". These had already been released on VHS and video CD .

The individual episodes of Schmidt each other were repeated several times between 2009 and 2011 on the ARD station Einsfestival . From 2011 to 2013 only the repetitions of the seven best-of programs were shown. From January to May 2016 the WDR showed 18 complete Schmidt each other episodes in a loose sequence on Saturday and Sunday at night.
