Klaus Bednarz

Klaus Bednarz (born June 6, 1942 in Falkensee ; † April 14, 2015 in Schwerin ) was a German journalist . He became known as the foreign correspondent for ARD in Poland and the Soviet Union and as the moderator of the news magazine Monitor .

Life and work

Klaus Bednarz was born in Falkensee near Berlin ( Osthavelland district ) into a family from Ukta in Masuria . He also started school here until the family moved to Hamburg in 1955 , where he passed his Abitur in 1961. After studying theater studies , the Slavic and East European History in Hamburg , Vienna and Moscow Bednarz in 1966 after a successful dissertation on the Russian writer Anton Chekhov at Vienna University doctorate . His career aspiration was an actor .

In response to a spontaneous application, Bednarz worked as a television correspondent from 1967, among other things as the first foreign correspondent for ARD in Poland , he built the ARD studio in Warsaw (1971-1977) and moved to the Moscow ARD studio in the Soviet Union (1977 -1982). From 1982 to 1983 he moderated the topics of the day for almost a year . In December 1983 he became editor-in-chief and moderator of the investigative program Monitor in the WDR , for which he was responsible for 1,500 monitor contributions over 18 years. In 2002 he handed over the management of Monitor to Sonia Seymour Mikich . From 2002 until his retirement in 2007, Bednarz was ARD special correspondent and chief reporter for the television section of WDR. In his television reports and book publications he dealt in particular with the countries in East Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia , but also with the south of Chile and Argentina .

According to a report by the star , Bednarz was spied on by an acquaintance of the GDR's state security , especially while he was working in Eastern Europe .

Bednarz was a member of the PEN Center Germany . He died on April 14, 2015 after a serious illness in Schwerin at the age of 72. He was buried in the family grave of the Harburg New Cemetery in Hamburg-Eißendorf .
