Purple Haze is a song by Jimi Hendrix , which he released on March 17, 1967 as the second single of the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Europe and on June 19, 1967 as the first single in the USA.

As a hit in the charts and as the opening song of the US version of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's debut album Are You Experienced , the piece was often the first impression of Hendrix's psychedelic rock sound for many listeners. The song is dominated by Hendrix 'innovative guitar playing enriched with blues elements. It was featured on almost all of Hendrix's compilation albums . The piece was performed regularly at his concerts, so that numerous live recordings of Purple Haze are documented.

Cover versions

Purple Haze became one of the most covered songs by Jimi Hendrix. A version worth mentioning was recorded in 1968 by Johnny Jones and the King Casuals of Nashville . The band was founded in 1962 as The King Kasuals by Jimi Hendrix and his army friend, bassist Billy Cox , after they both left the army. At the time of recording, Hendrix was no longer a member of the band.
