Structure of the program

The concept of the show contains the classic elements of a late night show such as stand-up , interviews with prominent guests and a musical performance. In addition, there are single-player films and recurring categories and games. In addition to the presenter, there is a studio band led by Mark Tavassol and the Florida TV writer and producer Jakob Lundt as a sidekick .

background

In July 2017, ProSieben announced a new weekly comedy show with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf for spring 2018. At the beginning of February 2018 it was finally announced that from March 12, 2018 the late night show entitled Late Night Berlin with Heufer circulation will be broadcast on ProSieben on Mondays at 11:10 p.m.

A few weeks before the premiere broadcast, short teasers were published on ProSieben and on the Internet , in which Heufer-Umlauf announced the show together with Axel Prahl in the role of a taxi driver .

Contrary to what the title suggests, the first two seasons of the show were not recorded in Berlin , but in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam . There were no free studios in Berlin. From the third season, the broadcast will be recorded in Berlin in the Berlin Adlershof studio . The broadcast is recorded on the day of broadcast at 4 p.m. in front of almost 200 viewers.

From September 17, 2018, a second season was broadcast despite the rather low audience ratings of the first season. From October 18, 2018, additional episodes were broadcast four times on Thursdays at 10:40 p.m. following the casting show The Voice of Germany . A third season started on February 18, 2019. From the fourth season, the programs were recorded and broadcast uncut, they started on September 23, 2019. The fifth season has been broadcast since February 24, 2020.

Summary of the individual episodes

reception

criticism

The tenor of the reviews of the first episode of Late Night Berlin was rather mixed. However, it was generally emphasized that the show and the team needed time to get used to better. Anja Rützel commented for Spiegel Online : “It still crunches a little. Klaas Heufer-Umlauf's 'Late Night Berlin' can still work - if the gags in the show get better. [...] All in all [...] you could say: It doesn't work yet, but it can work. ”Matthias Dell for Zeit Online also sees this in a similar way:“ [So] there is little to be said about Late Night Berlin after the first broadcast say. It will take some time to find out whether the show will have its own attraction at some point; if it has found its form. "The online magazine Quotenmeter.de subtitled" Klaas debuts bumpy, but with potential "and writes" Otherwise, however, is "Late Night Berlin" notes a program with great potential, which is that both her The moderator as well as the team behind the scenes make every effort to provide good entertainment. "

At the end of the first season, the criticism was also not very positive. On Süddeutsche.de it says: “You really want to find it good. [...] Only: Late Night Berlin doesn't really get going even after ten episodes. ”In particular, it is criticized that actions in the program are either unspectacular or devoid of content, apart from television it is - unlike much of the content from the competing show Neo Royale magazine - not discussed during the “lunch breaks”. Late Night Berlin also "turned more and more into a commercial from the expanded Pro-Sieben environment". The Tagesspiegel mainly points out the comparatively poor ratings, but with the hope that the broadcaster will stick to the format, because "Klaas Heufer-Umlauf does its job really well." Anja Rützel from Spiegel Online comes to the conclusion after twelve episodes that in particular the stand-up part at the beginning of the show with jokes about current topics still "rumbled tremendously", the punch lines were too obvious. After all, the dramaturgy had been worked on, films and studio actions would no longer be “milked to the end” as in the first episodes.

For the 50th edition, Carsten Heidböhmer from Stern.de stated that the show had "firmly established itself on TV". Heufer-Umlauf “grooved in”, the “timing of his gags is right”. The clips are great strengths, and he also manages to switch from political topics to “nonsense” content better than Jan Böhmermann in his program Neo Magazin Royale . At the same time, Alexander Krei wrote on DWDL.de that Late Night Berlin is now more and more rounded - also because the moderator is given more freedom.

In March 2020, the report format STRG F demonstrated the undeclared staging of several feature films of the show and related false statements by Heufer-Umlauf. In contrast to what is shown, the protagonists are informed about the course of the program and the program is thus scripted reality .

Audience ratings

After the first three editions had very good ratings, these subsequently fell significantly and remained consistently below the station average. Nevertheless, the broadcaster was relaxed: "'Late Night Berlin' has an average of 18.2 percent market share among our young viewers between 14 and 29 years old," says a Pro7 spokesman, "among 14 to 49 year olds our late night show is also a good 9.1 percent. So we are very happy with the start. "

The second season reached an average of 0.68 million viewers, corresponding to a market share of 4.6 percent. The target group of 14 to 49 year olds had an average of 0.50 million viewers and a “solid” 10.2 percent. The Monday editions (without best-of) brought 9.8 percent in the target group, the four Thursday editions "strong" 12.3 percent.

The third season had an average of 0.51 million television viewers aged three and over, which corresponded to a market share of 3.7 percent. Of these, an average of 0.41 million viewers were from the courted target group, which resulted in a “moderate” 9.5 percent.

With the fourth season, an average of 0.49 million viewers was reached, corresponding to a market share of 4.0 percent. Among the 14 to 49 year olds, an average of 0.41 million watched and thus 10.9%. Although the reach remained constant, the market share increased slightly. According to ProSieben, almost 60 percent of total viewers are reached via digital channels such as Joyn , YouTube or Facebook . Individual videos from the show, for example, received between three and five million views on YouTube. The music video with Capital Bra reached almost nine million clicks within two months.

Trivia

  • In a commercial break in the first issue, Jan Böhmermann addressed Heufer-Umlauf in a commercial booked by car rental company Sixt with a message. In the satirical video, Böhmermann said, among other things, “Why would I never host a late night show on private television? Just because of these annoying commercial breaks. ”Credible satire can only work without advertising. Numerous media reported on the action, in the second broadcast Heufer-Umlauf referred to it in several hints.
