episode 1
The ten candidates arrived at the villa one after the other and got to know each other or saw each other unexpectedly. The everyday life of the candidates is interrupted by various challenges. In the first game, Tobias and Carina prevailed, who were later allowed to choose their teams as captains. Tobias decided on Eva, Claudia, Ronald and Matthias. Carina decided on Désirée, Ennesto, Bastian and Janine. The two teams had to play another game against each other. Tobias' team won the game and had nomination protection. Carina was also not allowed to leave because she was team captain. However, she had to choose two people from her team to leave the show. She chose Désirée and Ennesto. Everyone in Tobias' team then had to decide who should leave the house. The majority opted for Ennesto, who had to leave the villa that same evening.
Episode 2
The remaining candidates initially played another game to find the two team captains. These became Bastian and Matthias. Bastian chose Janine, Carina and Eva for his team and Matthias chose Désirée, Ronald, Claudia and Tobias. In the second game, the candidates had to run from palm to palm and answer questions. In the end, the Matthias team was the winner. Bastian nominated Janine and Eva from his team for expulsion; the majority of Team Matthias selected Eva, who had to leave the house.
Episode 3
The first game again determined the team captains. These became Bastian and Janine. Claudia was not allowed to take part in the game the evening before because of a rule violation. Janine chose Tobias, Matthias and Désirée as team members, Bastian for Carina, Claudia and Ronald. In the play-off, three people per team, swimming blindly, pulled a chariot across the water, on which the fourth person led the others through gates and around a turning mark. Both teams did not complete the course . Team Janine lost a necessary further playoff and the captain nominated Matthias and Désirée for selection. The Bastian team decided unanimously against Désirée's whereabouts.
Episode 4
First of all, the team captains were determined again through a game. These became Bastian and Matthias. Bastian chose Janine, Claudia and Tobias as team members, Matthias for Carina and Ronald. In the decision game, one person lay on a large wooden plate as a swing, behind him the second person stood on the plate and made the swing movement. The third person stood at the side of the swing and aimed the ball in the direction of the head of the person lying down. She had to knock over cones standing in the sand with headers in front of her. The game, which was canceled by Ronald in Team Matthias, was won by Team Bastian with 24 to 3 pins. Only Carina and Ronald were available for selection, as Matthias had nomination protection. Bastian, Janine and Tobias decided against Ronald.
Episode 5
In the captain's game, the candidates in striped prisoner clothing had to cut the rope to which they were tied with a file. Then they had to solve a math problem in order to open a box with the result as a numerical code and the lock on their anklet with the key inside. Bastian and Carina were able to prevail. After the game, Claudia voluntarily left the house because of repeated bullying by other candidates. She was replaced by the last woman elected, Desirée. Bastian chose this and Janine for his team and Carina took Matthias and Tobias. Team Carina won the game. Janine and Désirée, who had to leave the house, were nominated.
Episode 6 (Finale)
In the first game, the fifth place was determined. The candidates had to throw a total of 50 tennis balls into the air and catch them with buckets. Carina couldn't get a catch, she had to leave the house. The last game consisted of five memory tasks and puzzles to be solved as quickly as possible. All former candidates came back to the villa to announce their winnings. Bastian Yotta solved the fastest and won 100,000 euros.
Special
The special celebrities under palm trees - the big debate was broadcast on May 6, 2020, moderated by Jochen Schropp . Eight participants were in the studio, Ronald Schill from Brazil connected. Bastian Yotta had not been invited because the broadcaster had stopped working with him.

Criticism
Up to and including the fourth episode of the format, critics were positive or enthusiastic.
- Timo Niemeyer from DWDL.de : “The new Sat.1 format" Promis unter Palmen "is the best reality television, where pretty much everything fits right away, thanks to a wonderful cast. This guilty pleasure comes at exactly the right time. "
- David Grzeschik of Quotenmeter.de praises: "Urgent to switch on all friends of manicured reality TV entertainment: With" celebrities under palm trees "Sat.1 a good trash mission succeeded that convinces with a strong cast and a high narrative pace."
- Anja Rützel writes at Spiegel Online about a “simple recipe that actually works excellently” , that “Sat.1 [has] swept up the most enthusiastic rubbish actors of the past few years. And thus invented a new genre: social porn. " Because: " Everything that happens here is garish and crude and insanely vulgar, at its core still recognizable as social interaction, but grotesquely exaggerated and brightly illuminated. "
- In Der Stern , Luisa Schwebel sums up: "'Celebrities under the palm trees' is not only a welcome change in everyday quarantine, but, there is no other way to put it: simply good television."
Controversy about the content of the program
One candidate was bullied during the first season . The production company EndemolShine Germany and the broadcaster Sat.1 were criticized for not intervening. There was an outraged media coverage that the limits of entertainment had been exceeded.
Peter Krauch wrote in the picture : “The way that Bastian Yotta , Carina Spack and Matthias Mangiapane chose for 'Celebrities under Palms', to really bully Claudia Obert, to blaspheme about her appearance, her age, her psyche, her existence to insult her, to put her down even though she was already weakened in the corner - that was no longer TV entertainment! ”In the course of this, Christian Vock from Web.de spoke of an“ anti-level format ”that was trash TV degenerate here into group bullying. Verena Maria Dittrich from n-tv also judged that the viewer would “witness total human dropouts. It's just fun to finish the 'drunk whore'! That is neither trashy 'confusion' nor entertainment, that is simple: bullying! "Anna Eube from Die Welt judged:" Celebrities under palm trees is an interpersonal horror film, worse than any jungle camp ".
In its statement, Sat.1 pointed out that psychologists were present at all times and had ensured the safety of everyone involved. It is "a show with reality-experienced celebrities who [...] are very aware that the camera is constantly on. We do not tell the celebrities how to behave as adults. ”With this statement, Sat.1 annoyed the viewers again. The users in the social media would have liked a clear positioning of the station.
Due to the events, an advertising partner ended their collaboration with Spack and Yotta. The violence prevention consultant Carsten Stahl , together with the organization Liebe wen Du Wollen eV, filed a criminal complaint against Sat.1 and EndemolShine Germany with the Berlin public prosecutor. Such content should not have been broadcast, because "it should not be tolerated that people who can be influenced see such behavior as 'normal'."
Because of the complaints, the fifth episode was temporarily removed from the media library; The responsible state center for media and communication is conducting an examination, among other things, concerning the protection of minors . According to the Association of Voluntary Self-Control Television (FSF), the episode in its present form should not have been broadcast until after 10 p.m. As "[particularly] problematic, our committee judged that the bullying attack was ultimately successful," said FSF managing director Claudia Mikat. The bullying was presented as normal social behavior and was not appropriately classified critically. Sat.1 appealed against the FSF's assessment.
The border crossings presented by the broadcaster for entertainment also included physical fights, candidates collapsing from exhaustion and sexism and were "sometimes seen long before the controversial semifinals", according to the media-critical online magazine Übermedien . In addition to bullying, the format also used sexual harassment as “ entertainment ”: “Three years after #MeToo , after the reform of the sexual criminal law with the principle no means no , which even the simplest minds understand , a camera-monitored trash TV villa is safe Space for sexual harassment. ”Overall, it would have been“ the bare minimum not to show at least the finale ”.
Following the first season, Sat.1 broadcast the special Promis unter Palmen - the big debate . Der Spiegel described it as “extremely dangerous, stupid malice” and “complete failure, in which people continued to nag and insult without hindrance.” Focus Online called it an “unworthy end”. Bild.de described presenter Jochen Schropp as "completely overwhelmed".
