Igor Michailowitsch Butman ( Russian Игорь Михайлович Бутман ; born October 27, 1961 in Leningrad ) is a Russian jazz musician ( alto , tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ), big band leader and jazz club operator.

Live and act

Butman's father was an engineer and amateur drummer; his younger brother Oleg also became a drummer. From 1975 to 1980 he studied clarinet and saxophone at the Mussorgsky Music School ; his teacher was Gennadi Golstein , who introduced him to the Voice of America jazz radio broadcasts . From 1979 to 1981 he played with David Goloschtschokin, 1982/83 with Oleg Lundstrem ; from 1984 to 1987 he was a member of the Allegro Quartet ; He also worked on the recordings of Sergei Kurjochin . In 1983 his first album was released under his own name on the Melodija label.

In 1987 he went to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston until 1989 , where he made numerous contacts. There he stepped u. a. also with Gary Burton and worked with their own formations in the Regatta Bar , including Rachel Z and Wolfgang Muthspiel . He also played in the Billy Taylor Quartet, the Walter Davis Jr. Quartet and the Monty Alexander Quintet. He also appeared with Pat Metheny and Grover Washington Jr. in the late 1980s . In 1992 he returned to Russia for a tour and worked in Moscow with Eddie Gomez . Back in New York, he recorded his first solo album with his own compositions in the USA in 1993, Falling Out , on which Eddie Gomez, Lyle Mays and Marvin Smitty Smith participated. He also played with Joe Locke in 1993 and then toured Europe with Lionel Hampton's band in 1994 . With Nick Levinowky , the Allegro Quartet was revived in 1995 . At the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the war, he played for Presidents Clinton and Yeltsin in Moscow.

In the following years he commuted frequently between Moscow and New York, worked a. a. with Gary Burton, Eddie Gomez, Lenny White , John Abercrombie . In 1997 his album Nostalgie was released . In 1998 he worked on the album Method to the Madness of the music collaborative New York Jazz Guerrilla with Torsten de Winkel ; Wynton Marsalis brought him to the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra as a guest soloist . In the following year he worked with a big band formation with Russian musicians, in which Marsalis also appeared as a guest soloist; other guests were Dee Dee Bridgewater , George Benson , Gino Vannelli , Joe Lovano , Billy Cobham , the New York Voices and Randy Brecker . In 2003 the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Igor Butman Big Band worked together at the Jazz at Lincoln Center . In 2006 Butman recorded a new album themed based on old Soviet cartoons and films; it seemed Chick Corea , John Patitucci , Randy Brecker, Stefon Harris and Jack DeJohnette with. He also worked with Daniel Kramer .

He is a very active organizer in the Moscow jazz scene with many contacts in various areas of Russian society. He organized the Triumph of Jazz Festival in Moscow, which has been held since 2000. He also runs the leading Moscow jazz club Le Club .
