Daniel Kramer , Russian Даниил Крамер , (* 1960 in Charkiw ) is a Ukrainian-Russian jazz pianist .

Live and act

Kramer was initially trained as a classical pianist at the music school in his hometown. Until 1983 he studied at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow with E. Y Liberman, the successor to Heinrich Neuhaus , where he became increasingly interested in jazz after a concert by Leonid Chizhik . In 1982 he took part in a competition for jazz improvisers in Vilnius and won the first prizes. From 1983 he taught himself at the Gnessin Academy, but also worked as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic. Since 1984 he has appeared increasingly as a jazz musician at all Soviet festivals, since 1988 also in other European countries, but also in the United States and China. He has performed at the Munich Piano Summer , the Finnish Baltic Jazz and also the Australian Manly Jazz Festival . He performed with Didier Lockwood at the Rheingau Music Festival . Kramer also appeared in the crossover area with symphony orchestras and classical string quartets . He also toured with the singer Philipp Weiss . In his solo concerts he mixes different genres of jazz from traditional to modern jazz .

After Kramer was appointed professor at the Gnessin Academy, he taught at the jazz department of the Stasov Music School in Moscow. In 1994 he opened the jazz improvisation class at the Moscow State Conservatory.

Prizes and awards

In 1997 Kramer was awarded the title of "Honored Artist of Russia", in 2012 the title of " People's Artist of Russia ". In 2002 he was the first jazz musician to receive the Gustav Mahler Prize from the Prague-based European Union of Artists .
