Oleg Leonidowitsch Lundstrem (also Lundström ; Russian Олег Леонидович Лундстрем; born April 2, 1916 in Chita ; † October 14, 2005 in Moscow ) was a Russian jazz musician and orchestra conductor.

Life

Lundstrem was the first son of a teacher who moved with his family to Harbin in Manchuria in 1921 to teach physics there as an employee of the Chinese railway company, first in a middle school, then in the polytechnic institute. Oleg Lundstrem finished the commercial school there in 1931 and then studied at the same time at the Polytechnic Institute and the Music Academy. In 1935 he completed the latter with a degree in violin.

During the years of his music studies in the early 1930s , he and his fellow students learned about jazz from Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong and began performing at local music events. Lundstrem experimented with big band arrangements. In 1934 he and his friends founded an eight-piece jazz band that soon moved from Harbin to Shanghai , where they performed in hotels and the famous Majestic dance club . Lundstrem began to arrange Russian pieces in jazz style and had great success with it. Soon some of the band members were considered the best musicians in town (“The King of Jazz in the Far East”).

The "Orchester Lundstrem", a big band without stringed instruments, was the first of its kind to perform real jazz in an orchestra in the Soviet Union. Oleg Lundstrem was included in the Guinness Book of Records for leading and conducting his orchestra for more than 65 years.

From 1961 to 1972 the pianist and composer Nikolai Kapustin was one of the members, who composed several of his works especially for the band, including his Toccata for piano and big band op. 8 (1964). A remarkable, very rare film document bears witness to this.

Oleg Lundstrem was awarded a special certificate from UNESCO for his services to world art. In 1993 he received an honorary doctorate from the Akademio Internacia de la Sciencoj (AIS, International Academy of Sciences) San Marino.

The article Red Hot With a Blue Note about Oleg Lundstrem by Kim Murphy was one of the reasons why Kim Murphy received the Pulitzer Prize 2005 in the International Reporting section.

Works

Lundstrem's early works include a symphony, a cello sonata and a suite, all in the Tatar style. He later turned to big band jazz, striving in works such as Mirage (Мираж, 1947), Bukhara ornament (Бухарский орнамент, 1972), and In the Georgian Mountains ( W gorach Grusii , В горах Грузии, 1973) was to find a national style. In 1986 he released a greatest hits album of his own compositions.
