Oleg Butman

Oleg Mikhailovich Butman ( Russian Олег Михайлович Бутман * 9. July 1966 in Leningrad ) is a Russian jazz - drummer .

Oleg Butman is the younger brother of the jazz saxophonist Igor Butman , with whom he repeatedly worked. He started playing drums at the age of eight and became a member of the Russian rock band Telewisor at the age of 15 .

In 1983 Oleg Butman began to study at the Musorgsky College of Music in St. Petersburg and played in the college orchestra. During this time he performed at the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival with the saxophonist Valerij Sukow. From 1984 to 1987 he was a member of his brother's quartet; In 1988 he accompanied the American saxophonist Richie Cole on a tour of Russia. In 1988 Oleg Butman moved to Moscow, where he performed with guest American musicians such as Jon Faddis , Billy Taylor , Grover Washington Jr. and Pat Metheny at the “Bluebird” jazz club.

In 1990 Oleg Butman left the country to study and work in the United States. He first attended Berklee College of Music in Boston , then moved to New York, where he a. a. worked with Metheny, Monty Alexander , Harvie Swartz , Joe Locke and Eddie Gomez . In 1997 he worked on his brother Igor's album Nostalgia ; In 1998 he went on a tour of Russia with a project called Four Brothers . In 2001 he visited Russia with his American quartet, in which tenor saxophonist Craig Handy played. He also worked with Mark Whitfield , Vincent Herring and Larry Willis during this time .

In 2007 Oleg Butman wrote music for the pianist Natalia Smirnova; with her came another solo album by Butman, Jazz Passion .
