Ted Daniel

Ted Daniel (born June 4, 1943 in Ossining , New York ) is an American jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn , French horn , Clairon , flute ).

Live and act

Daniel already learned to trumpet at elementary school ; an early model was the music of Clifford Brown . He began his professional career as a musician by performing locally with his friend Sonny Sharrock . He briefly studied at Berklee School of Music and Southern Illinois University before joining the US Army and serving in Vietnam in 1966. After his release, he continued his studies at Central State College in Ohio . a. at Makanda Ken McIntyre . On his return to New Nork, he earned a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition from the City College of New York . The first recordings were made in 1969 while studying with Sonny Sharrock ( Black Woman ). For Herbie Mann's embryo label , he recorded the album Brute Force with his brother Richard Daniel .

From the 1970s Daniel worked in the loft scene on the Lower East Side a . a. with Byard Lancaster , Dave Burrell , Archie Shepp , Richard Dunbar , Dewey Redman ( Ear of the Behearer , 1974), Marty Cook , Andrew Cyrille ( Wildflowers 1976, Metamusician's Stomp , 1978), Khan Jamal , Sam Rivers , Julius Hemphill , Billy Bang and Luther Thomas ( Don't Tell! 2007) .. In the 1970s he led the big band project Energy , u. a. with Kappo Umezu and Mary Anne Driscoll . He also held workshops at Amherst College , Bennington College , Williams College and at Hōsei University in Tokyo. In the 1970s he released three albums under his own name, The Ted Daniel Sextet (Ujamaa), Tapestry (Sun) and In the Beginning (Altura), and others. a. with Oliver Lake , Arthur Blythe , Charles Tyler and David Murray .

In the 1980s and 1990s, he performed only occasionally and worked as a social worker and psychotherapist. In 1982 he recorded with Andrew Cyrille ( The Navigator ); During this time he began working with Henry Threadgill , in whose big band and sextet he played ( song Out of My Trees 1994). In the 2000s he worked with the Trio International Brass and Membrane Corporation (including with Charles Burnham , Newman Taylor Baker and Howard Johnson ), with Charles Compos Formation The Phibes and in a duo with Michael Marcus (clarinet), with whom he recorded the Duology albums ( Boxholder ) and Golden Atoms ( Soul Note , 2008).
