Michael Wayne Carvin (* 12. December 1944 in Houston , Texas ) is an American jazz - drummer , bandleader and teacher.

Live and act

Carvin came to Los Angeles in 1963, where he became a studio musician and studied at LA Community College. 1964/65 he played in the Big Band of Earl Grant , went on tour with the he spent two years through Europe, Japan and the United States. From 1966 to 1968 he was in Vietnam to entertain the US troops. He toured with BB King and worked for Motown Records in Detroit in the late 1960s . From 1970 he was back in Los Angeles. In 1973 he was a member of Freddie Hubbard's band ; then he moved to New York . There he worked a. a. with Pharoah Sanders , Lonnie Liston Smith and McCoy Tyner , appeared in the trio of Hampton Hawes at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival and performed a. a. on recordings by Jackie McLean ( New York Calling , 1974 and duo album Antiquity ) and Frank Strozier ( Remember Me , 1976). In 1975 he made his debut album The Camel for Steeplechase with Cecil Bridgewater and Sonny Fortune ; In 1982 he worked in the quartet of saxophonist Charles Davis . He has lived in New York since 1983. He has taught at Rutgers University and published books on drumming. With his students he formed the Young Drummers of America ensemble .

From the late 1980s he recorded some albums for Muse Records under his own name; in Between Me and You (1989) he starred with Claudio Roditi , John Stubblefield , Cyrus Chestnut and Cecil Bridgewater; Sonny Fortune and John Hicks also played on the album Revelation (1989), which was made a few months later . In the 1990s he worked on a few productions by Muse and Steeplechase, such as Ernie Andrews , Randy Johnston and Terumasa Hino . In 1990 he played in Frank Lacy's quartet with Fred Hopkins ; 1991 with Hamiet Bluiett . 2000 Carvin was on the album Low Down and Blue by Frank Lowe to hear; In 2001 he worked on the Butch Morris- directed production Vietnam - The Aftermath by Billy Bang .

Michael Carvin's last release was the (after Allmusic best) album Marsalis Music Honors Michael Carvin from 2006, on which he worked with a trio of younger musicians, such as bassist Dezron Douglas , pianist Carlton Holmes and tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland ; Producer Branford Marsalis made a guest appearance on the medley "Prisoner of Love / Body and Soul ". In 2013 he was still working with his band The Michael Carvin Experience , which includes Keith Loftis (saxophone), Yayoi Ikawa (piano) and Jansen Cinco (bass).

Carvin taught in his own drum school in New York and wrote the textbook Something for All Drummers . His students included u. a. Neal Smith , Eric McPherson and the Dane Aage Tanggaard .
