Neal Smith (jazz musician)

Neal Smith (* about 1975 in Cleveland Heights , Ohio ) is an American jazz - drummer , bandleader and university teachers .

Live and act

Smith began playing the drums when he was five; after graduating from high school, he studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music , where he earned a bachelor's degree in jazz and performance. He also took lessons from Vernell Fournier , Greg Bandy , Paul Samuels , Michael Carvin , Tom Freer and Bruce Collie . He played in the bands of Cyrus Chestnut , Tom Harrell and Brian Lynch ; His debut album Swingin 'Is Believin' was released on his own label NAS in 2005 , followed by Some of My Favorite Songs Are ... in the same year. In 2009 a live album was created in the jazz club Smalls , in which Eric Alexander , Steve Wilson , Mark Whitfield , Mulgrew Miller and Dezron Douglas participated. He teaches as an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music . He founded his own label for jazz NASMusic.

Neal Smith should not be confused with the Alice Cooper drummer (* 1947) of the same name .
