The University of Missouri is a system of state research universities in the US state of Missouri . It consists of four campuses:

All four campuses have the same meaning and the diplomas are awarded centrally by the University of Missouri. Columbia is the main campus for full-time study and research, the Rolla campus is highly regarded for its engineering programs, and the Kansas City and St. Louis campuses are largely made up of part-time students. All campuses could award the doctoral degree .

The generic name University of Missouri is mostly used to refer to the Columbia campus, especially in the context of NCAA university sports.

In autumn 2005 a total of 63,200 students were enrolled in the university network. 16,300 employees, including 7,200 scientific staff, are employed.

The University of Missouri was founded in Columbia in 1839 . It was the first state higher education institution west of the Mississippi River . In 1870 the university established the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla . The system was expanded in 1963 when the University of Kansas City (which was previously a private college) was acquired and renamed UM-Kansas City . In the same year a new campus was built for the UM-St. Louis . The School of Mines was renamed UM-Rolla in 1964 .

The UM system's business premises are in Columbia.
