Paul-François Vranken

Paul-François Vranken (born May 18, 1947 in Liège ) is a Belgian champagne manufacturer .

Life

After studying law, he began his professional career in the French branch of the large corporation Bass and Charrington, which imports some brands of whiskey for the local market and marketed various brands of champagne. The trading house entrusted the then 23-year-old with the sale of the De Castellane champagne brand on the Belgian market. Within the first 2 years he was able to increase sales from 0 to approx. 160,000 bottles / year. Because of a profit-sharing scheme, he received 130,000 French francs.

In 1976 he decided to start his own company. He invested the success bonus at the time in the purchase of 16,000 kg of grapes in Champagne . He developed the must obtained from it himself and was able to win over wholesalers for the sale of his products, which he marketed under the name Vranken. This approach was new in the mid-1970s.

In 1978 he bought the Veuve Monnier brand, and in 1983 the cognac brand Charles Lafitte. In the same year he founded the champagne brand of the same name.

After taking over other small trading houses and the first wineries in the meantime, he bought the well-known Heidsieck & Co. Monopole brand in 1996 . Two years later his company was listed on the Paris Stock Exchange .

With the increased capital from the IPO, he bought Pommery and the first port wine trading house called Rozés. In 2005 he took over the worldwide distribution of Listel rosé wines .

His group Vranken-Pommery Monopole had a consolidated turnover of 288 million euros in 2005.
