history
Pommery & Greno was founded in 1856 by Louis-Alexandre Pommery and Narcisse Greno. The core business was trading in wool. Louise Pommery built the company into the most famous champagne brand at the end of the 19th century.
Louise Pommery
Jeanne Alexandrine Louise Mélin was born on March 18, 1819 in the Ardennes department . She married Alexandre Pommery in 1839. After Alexandre's death in 1860, Louise Pommery took over the management of Pommery & Greno and consistently geared the trading company towards the production and trading of champagne. She was one of the first to recognize the importance of the rock passages carved into the chalk cliffs by Roman soldiers for storing wine.
One of their main markets was England. In order to do justice to the even then drier taste of the English, she commissioned her cellar master to develop a “brut nature” champagne, and a few years later became the inventor of the “ brut ” champagne.
