Missouri Western State University

The Missouri Western State University is a public university in Saint Joseph , in the US state of Missouri . Approximately 5,100 students are enrolled at the university. It was founded in 1915 as a two-year institution called St. Joseph Junior College . In 1969 the facility was converted into a four year college and in 1977 it was renamed Missouri Western State College . On August 28, 2005 , the State of Missouri changed its name to Missouri Western State University by law .

The three square kilometer campus in the east of the city is home to 18 academic departments. The focus is on humanities disciplines, but scientific and technical directions are also represented.

The university's mascot is the griffin . In the second division of the NCAA , students compete in the 10 sports (men: baseball , basketball , American football and golf ; women: basketball, golf, soccer , softball , tennis and volleyball ).
