KangaROOS is a sports shoe brand from the British Pentland Group , which also owns brands such as Ellesse and Speedo .

Brand history

The company KangaROOS was founded in 1979 by Bob Gamm in the USA in St. Louis . The architect invented the shoes with the small bag in which small utensils can be stowed. In addition to the small bag with which all models are equipped, the kangaroo logo has been the unchanged trademark since 1982.

In the early 1980s, KangaROOS was the fastest growing brand in the US, selling 700,000 pairs of shoes per month at one point. At the height of popularity around 1985, Bob Gamm opened the “KangaROOS Laboratory & Gymnasium” on an area of 10,000 m 2 , where the various types of shoes could be developed, improved and tested for various sports. Today, however, the brand only leads a niche existence in the USA, even if it was a little stronger represented again in the late 1990s.

In 1981 Bernd Hummel GmbH from Pirmasens received the distribution and license agreement for Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The first collection designed in the USA was launched on the German market for the autumn / winter 1983/84 season.

In 1991 KangaROOS was taken over by the Pentland Group plc. in London , and Bernd Hummel GmbH signed a master license agreement with Pentland , which from that point on enabled the Pirmasens-based company to independently design its own collections and tailor them specifically to the German and European market. In August 2002 the license agreement with Pentland was extended for another ten years. The Palatinate company is now the world's largest licensee of the brand and now also has the license rights for several Eastern European countries.
