Ralston Purina Company was an American pet food company headquartered in St. Louis , Missouri, USA . In 1894 William H. Danforth (1870–1955) founded the Robinson Danforth Commission Company, which produces special food for farm animals. The name Purina arose from the company slogan "Where purity is paramount" (for example, "Purity is our highest commandment"). The logo with the nine red and white squares ( checkerboard ) was developed, according to company information, from childhood memories of a neighboring family who dressed their children in red and white checked suits. In 1902 William H. Danforths adopted this pattern for his products.

Around 1950, the Purina company used its experience in the development of commercial pet food to produce Purina Dog Chow, a dog food composed according to nutritional criteria that was sold in the food retail sector. Purina Cat Chow for cats followed in 1962, and further products for the nutrition of cats and dogs were added in the following years.

In 2001, Ralston Purina was taken over by the Swiss food company Nestlé , which sells its pet food in Germany through its subsidiary Nestlé Purina PetCare Deutschland GmbH, based in Euskirchen .
