Nicanor Perlas (* 1950 ) is a Filipino sociologist and environmental activist.

Nicanor Perlas

Perlas studied agricultural science. Because of his anti-atomic work he had to leave the Philippines in 1978 . After the end of Ferdinand Marcos' regime , Perlas returned. He founded the Center for Development Alternatives (CADI), which advocates ecologically oriented agriculture ( permaculture , biodiversity ...) and sustainable development in which undesirable forms of unrestrained growth are overcome.

He is regarded as the leading environmental activist in the Philippines, where he became a key figure in efforts to shape globalization in a participatory manner on all levels of society. In this context, he founded a banking system (Lifebank) that is supposed to ensure the survival of small farmers.

In the global civil society that is forming but still to be united , Perlas sees a balancing force in the debate about shaping globalization. The neglected 'culturally creative' aspects should complement the 'regulating' on the political and the 'supplying' on the economic level.

Perlas is also committed to seeing globalization as a spiritual task. He is a member of the Club of Budapest and advisor on sustainable development at the UN.

Nicanor Perlas also took part in youth congresses on the topic of globalization in Germany (2006 Ismaning , 2008 Stuttgart).

On June 17, 2009, Perlas announced that he would run for the 2010 presidential election, which he could not win.
